Continue ShoppingThere were forty-four plates before this one. This is Plate XLV: a botanical specimen collected from the tide pool at the base of the north cliff, at low tide, on a day that isn't noted. The label reads not for the common catalogue — a designation that appears nowhere else in the archive, with no explanation for what it means or what common catalogue she's referring to.
You don't need to know. The print knows. It belongs in the room where you keep the things that don't fit neatly into any other category — the interesting ones, the ones with a notation in the margin. It works in a gallery wall and it works alone. It is patient with either arrangement.
