The night jasmine doesn't hold on. By dawn it has released the branch entirely, dropped to the ground, done — which in Vivienne's taxonomy is not a tragedy but a characteristic worth noting. Everything in her archive is noted on its own terms.
The oval format gives Nyctanthes the feeling of a locket portrait or a cabinet miniature: small, intimate, the piece that rewards the close look more than the wide view. The annotation is the poem.
