Reading happens differently — at the tide pool on the north side, at the precise hour when the water begins to glow, in the dark, with a spiral of shells arranged on the wet rock as the instrument. The moon floats in the water beside her, not metaphorically: it is there, present in the bioluminescence, governing the whole proceeding from just below the surface. The California poppies grow from the rock where the salt should have killed them. She is completely absorbed in what she's doing, which looks from the outside like something between science and ceremony and is, she would probably tell you, simply the work.
The Tide Reader is the collection's most powerful figurative piece — the image that explains Cleo's practice better than any document in the archive could. Some knowledge can't be filed. It can only be performed, at the site, by the person who knows where to stand. This is the print for the room where you understand that.
