A flock of gulls over the open water on a regular day — the sky a soft blue-grey watercolor wash, the birds pencil-and-ink sketched over it at different depths and different moments of flight, the horizon a teal-grey ocean with white foam breaking at the bottom edge. The whole composition is layered and lightly worn: scratched, textured, the visual quality of a sketch that lived in a coat pocket near the sea for longer than intended. Some birds are close enough to show the black wing-tips, the set of the beak. Others are smaller, barely more than a mark against the sky. All of them are doing what gulls do over the harbor water on a Tuesday — which is to say, exactly what they want.
Harbor Birds is the collection's most quietly beautiful piece. Not dramatic. Not strange. Just the sky above the water, and the birds in it, recorded with the same care Cleo gave everything else in the archive's range.
