She meant to return the library book. She meant to write the correspondence. She meant to visit town.

June Ellery Wilde keeps two lists. The first is things she forgot to ask — it has never been finished. The second is "Things I Meant To Do Today": the top half full of sensible intentions left unticked, the bottom half full of things she did instead. The bottom half is always longer.

She followed a butterfly for three fields east of the farmhouse and found a house that isn't there. She knocked. Nobody answered. She has not stopped thinking about it.
