Salt + Citrus

Paloma Maris Bellamy arrived in Florida with a boat, a parrot, and a plan she has never explained.

The boat is called the Paloma Maris, hand-lettered on the hull in coral paint that has been touched up enough times that nobody could tell you what color it started. The parrot is Hemingway — named for the writer, who also lived in Florida and also drank, which Paloma finds relevant. He prefers grapefruit palomas through a teal paper straw and watches the sunset as though it was arranged specifically for him. Pearl, the albino alligator, lives in the hull. She has a leather collar with gold hardware and a Florida fishing license with an official addendum in the margin reading "one (1) albino alligator, domestic." An official stamp has been placed over this. Nobody asked. Together, the three of them have settled into a particular stretch of the Everglades that felt right, which they have all chosen not to examine too closely.
